Year 12 · VCE / Foundation Mathematics
Flashcards and recall.
Make a short deck from material you need to recall without notes.
Try this with Foundation Mathematics
- Write one prompt per card. Use definitions, explanations or examples from your current topic.
- Answer aloud before turning the card. Split a card if it asks for several unrelated facts.
- Set aside missed cards and revisit them in a later session.
Recall topics

- State the mathematical meaning of the words 'sum', 'difference', 'product' and 'quotient'
- Rational number
- Irrational number
- Is 22/7 rational or irrational, and how does it relate to π?
- Why is an answer involving π usually written as a decimal in Foundation Mathematics?
- Is √16 rational or irrational? What about √20?
- A tape measure gives a diagonal as 5.66 m when the exact value is 4√2 m. Comment on this in terms of rational and irrational numbers.
- Ratio
- Write 250 g : 400 g as a ratio in simplest whole-number form
- $320 is shared in the ratio 3 : 5. How much does each person receive?
- Proportion
- A recipe for 4 people needs 600 g of rice. How much is needed for 10 people?
- Rate
- A car travels 540 km on 45 L of fuel. Express this as a rate two different ways.
- A van covers 96 km in 1 hour 15 minutes. Find the average speed in km/h.
- Unit price (unit cost) and how it decides the better buy
- On a map with scale 1 : 25 000, two points are 6 cm apart. Find the real distance in kilometres.
- Three quantities are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 7 and the smallest is 18. Find the largest.
- How do you check that a proportional answer is set up the right way round?
- Percentage change
- A price rises from $45 to $54. Find the percentage increase.
- A quantity falls from 80 to 68. Find the percentage decrease.
- State the multiplier for a 12% increase and for a 12% decrease
- After a 20% increase an item costs $96. Find the original price.
- An amount is increased by 15% and then decreased by 15%. What is the overall change?
- A town's population grows by 3% each year for 4 years. Find the total percentage growth.
- Find 15% of $64 without a calculator, and describe the method
- 35% of a number is 91. Find the number.
- Percentage error
- A length is estimated as 250 cm but is actually 240 cm. Find the percentage error, correct to one decimal place.
- Two students both make a 5 cm error, one measuring a 50 cm bench and one a 5 m wall. Compare their percentage errors and explain what this shows.
- Distinguish 'percentage of', 'percentage change' and 'percentage points'
